The Red Squirrel: A Lovely Sight In The UK

The red squirrel is a lovely sight in the UK. It has bright red fur, a big tail, and ear tufts. It races around gardens or woodland, looking for new food or trying to remember where it hid something it found the last time. It is smaller than the grey squirrel, which you can also see a lot in the UK. _____1_____

Red squirrels live in many parts of Europe and Asia, and there are a lot of them in the UK. They like living in woods, especially where there are pine trees. Pine trees give them their favourite food - seeds and cones. _____2_____

But, in a development that causes sadness in a lot of British people, the number of red squirrels in the UK has been getting lower for many years. This is mainly because of the grey squirrel, which was brought from North America in the 19th century. _____3_____

Today, people are working hard to protect the red squirrel. They are looking after their living areas, teaching people about them, and sometimes, controlling the number of grey squirrels. _____4_____ But, it is still not certain what will happen to the red squirrel in the UK and an animal which has long been part of history and literature may not survive.

The problems faced by the red squirrel show us a bigger issue: how people's actions can harm animals that lived here before us. As we move forward, it's important to think about how what we do can change nature. _____5_____
