Part 7 of the C1 Advanced Reading and Use of English is Gapped Text. In the gapped text task, you must restore six missing paragraphs to their correct positions in a text, understanding how ideas develop and connect through language features and logical flow.
Gapped Text Reading Exercise 1 - Gapped Text Reading Exercise 1
Gapped text reading exercise: Mountains in My Blood.
Exercise Number: CAE304
Read the entire text first, even with the gaps! Don't treat each gap as a separate puzzle. Understanding the overall structure and theme is crucial. A common mistake is choosing a paragraph that fits nicely before the gap but creates a jarring transition with the text that follows. Always check that your chosen paragraph flows smoothly in both directions.

Look for connecting devices in the text. These are like bridges between paragraphs and include:
- Time markers ("Subsequently", "Meanwhile")
- Cause and effect ("As a result", "Consequently")
- Contrasting ideas ("However", "Nevertheless")
- Pronouns referring to previously mentioned things or people
- Related vocabulary and paraphrasing

Exercise Number: CAE307

Gapped text reading exercise: Life Cycles in a Pacific Reef System.
Exercise Number: CAE308
Often you'll find yourself torn between two paragraphs that could potentially fit. Don't just choose the first one that seems okay - compare them carefully. Look for subtle clues in both the paragraphs before and after the gap. The correct answer will create the most logical flow of ideas.

Don't fall into the word-matching trap! Just because you see the same names, dates, or vocabulary in two places doesn't mean they belong together. The exam tests your understanding of how ideas develop and connect, not your ability to spot matching words. Focus on the logical progression of thoughts and arguments.
