Writing Paper Paper: Part One

Overview
What is it? A compulsory essay task where you respond to a question and prompts.
Word count: 140-190 words
Time: About 40 minutes recommended
Marks: 20 marks (50% of the Writing paper)
How to Approach
- Read the essay question and the notes carefully - you must cover all points given
- Plan your essay before starting to write - include an introduction, main paragraphs and conclusion
- Use two paragraphs to cover the two given points from the notes
- Add your own idea in another paragraph - this is required
- Link your paragraphs using appropriate connecting words
What Examiners Look For
Your essay needs to show you can:
- Give opinions clearly and explain your reasons
- Compare and contrast different ideas
- Write in a neutral or formal style appropriate for an essay
- Organise your ideas logically with good paragraph structure
- Use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately
Tips
- Always spend 5 minutes planning - a good structure helps you write more clearly
- Make sure you develop each point with explanations and examples
- Include your own idea but make sure it's relevant to the topic
- Check your word count - essays under 140 words will lose marks
