Protecting Young Minds

The evidence for restricting social media access for under-18s is overwhelming. Studies consistently show correlations between social media use and rising rates of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders among teenagers. Platform algorithms deliberately exploit young users' vulnerabilities, creating addictive behaviour patterns that interfere with crucial developmental stages. The constant pursuit of 'likes' and followers damages self-esteem, while cyberbullying has reached epidemic proportions. Sleep deprivation is widespread among teenage users, affecting academic performance and physical health. Moreover, social media companies' data collection practices raise serious privacy concerns, as young users cannot truly understand the implications of sharing personal information. The developing brain is particularly susceptible to the dopamine-driven feedback loops these platforms create, potentially affecting long-term cognitive development and emotional regulation.

Digital Citizens in a Digital World

Banning social media for under-18s would be both impractical and counterproductive in today's interconnected world. These platforms have become essential tools for modern socialisation, learning, and creative expression. Young people use social media to build supportive communities, particularly beneficial for those who feel isolated in their physical environments. The platforms provide unprecedented opportunities for youth political engagement, environmental activism, and cultural exchange. Digital literacy is crucial for future employment, and early exposure helps develop critical thinking skills about online information. Many young entrepreneurs have built successful businesses through social media, gaining valuable real-world experience. Rather than imposing bans, we should focus on teaching responsible usage and improving platform safety features. Preventing access would simply drive young people to use these platforms secretly, without proper guidance or supervision.
