On this page, you will find eight example speaking tests to help you prepare students for the speaking part of the B1 Preliminary exam.

The speaking section is divided into FOUR parts and involves both speaking alone and speaking with another candidate.

Teaching Tip: Part 1 - Interview

1. Prepare students to remain calm during the initial questions about personal details. Help them practise giving clear, concise answers about their name and where they live.

2. Train students to provide more detailed responses for questions about daily life and free time. Teach them to aim for 2-3 sentence answers with specific examples.
Example: Show students how to expand on a simple question about free time activities by adding context and personal details.

Teaching Tip: Part 2 - Photograph

1. Guide students in developing a structured approach to photo description. Teach them to begin with the main subject and then add details, using phrases like "This picture shows..." or "In the photo, I can see..."

2. Help students build vocabulary for describing spatial relationships. Practise using words like "in the background", "on the left", "in the middle" to describe photo elements.

3. Emphasize the importance of listening skills during their partner's photo description. Instruct students to remain silent and attentive during their partner's turn.

Teaching Tip: Parts 3 and 4 - Discussion

1. For Part 3, teach students conversational phrases for discussing options. Help them practise using expressions like "I think this is good because..." or "The problem with this is..."

2. Prepare students for Part 4 by practising active listening and clarification techniques. Teach them appropriate ways to ask for repetition, such as "Could you repeat that, please?"

3. Encourage students to contribute to the discussion while understanding that balanced participation is key. Help them develop strategies for sharing ideas even if they're less confident speakers.
