Elementary: Reading & Writing Lesson Plans

Description: Students work on different vacation vocabulary such as trekking, cruise, city break, etc. Then they read an ad for a cruise and answer comprehension questions with an optional writing assignment to end.

Description: An article (quite challenging for this level) about Jake, a man who spends 4 months looking after a lighthouse. Using present simple to talk about routines with a particular focus on forming interrogative sentences. Optional writing activity at the end.

Description: After an initial exercise that focuses on the vocabulary used to describe types of TV shows, students read descriptions of different TV programs and the likes and dislikes of four people who live together. The final reading activity consists of a TV listings page in a newspaper that forms the core of a speaking activity.

Description: Some job vocabulary for your students before they read about Derek, who picks up garbage at the sports stadium. There is a reading comprehension exercise and the lesson finishes with a game in which students use the present simple to describe jobs to their partner.

Description: A lesson that practices the use of the infinitive to talk about why someone went somewhere (e.g. to see the pyramids, to eat pizza, to visit a friend, etc) The theme of the lesson is tourism and the reason people travel to certain countries, with a particular focus on the Gold Coast in Australia, which forms the basis of the main reading comprehension exercise. The lesson finishes with a speaking activity to practice the infinitive of purpose.

Description: Some basic letter writing and organising skills are taught, focusing on paragraph content and ordering too. Another letter is used for an error-correction exercise to review this level's grammar.

Description: Students write sentences about themselves, learn how to connect them using conjunctions and then respond to a fictional pen pal e-mail.

Description: After a warm-up game based on identification of language parts, students review rules concerning the word order of verbs, adverbs and adjectives. Fun poker-based game to finish with which gets students thinking again about sentence structure.
